This is a fascinating question but does merit the attention and sound understanding of IT and Security professionals. Although these two categories are very closely related, there are some differences worth mentioning. From a broad perspective, system design could be described as a part of the system architecture's larger element.

Ulbrich et al. (2017) proposed that system architecture outlines the bigger picture. According to ISO 26262 (Road Vehicles - Functional Safety), some essential elements include simplicity, precisely defined interfaces, granularity, and avoidance of unnecessary complexity, which feeds into an overall framework's scope. The system architecture will yield business requirements.

On the other hand, System Design deals with the "how" and is a consolidation of the main requirements of the system architecture. The system design describes the level of detail that undergirds the big picture elements. Sourcemaking (2020) remarked that patterning allows a software engineer to develop repeatable solutions for everyday problems in system design. At the system design level, aspects such as classes, responsibilities, and interface functions tie together the front-end and the overall system's back-end.

Faisandier & Roedler [1] (2020) assert that System Architecture (SA) is an abstract that is conceptualization-oriented, global, and focused to achieve the mission and life cycle concepts of the system. Some of the goals of the SA activities are as follows (TutorialPoint, n.d.):

* Expose the structure of the system but hide its implementation details.* Realize all the use-cases and scenarios.* Try to address the requirements of various stakeholders.* Handle both functional and quality requirements.* Reduce the goal of ownership and improve the organization's market position.* Improve the quality and functionality offered by the system.* Improve external confidence in either the organization or system.

System Architecture defines a comprehensive solution and focuses on the high-level structure in systems and system elements and addresses the architectural principles, concepts, properties, and characteristics of the system. The SA has features, properties, and characteristics which satisfy the problem solution or opportunity expressed by a set of system requirements (traceable to mission/business and stakeholder requirements) and life cycle concepts (e.g., operational, support) that can be implemented through various technologies (e.g., mechanics, electronics, software, services, procedures, human activity). (Faisandier & Roedler [1], 2020). igor
