Raging Rivers Hotels

Raging Rivers is a hotel chain that owns complexes in Washington, Oregon, California, and

Idaho. Each hotel complex contains anywhere from 100 to 606 rooms and suites, of varying

sizes. All accommodations are rented from 1 night to 30 nights upon request.

It is the company’s practice to hire one manager for each complex. As manager, he or she needs

to oversee the hotel staff. This oversight includes the front desk operation, the restaurant

operation, and maintenance to the building. The manager needs to maintain various records for

reporting. These reports are sent back to the parent company weekly and some daily.

Each manager is expected to send a series of reports back to the company headquarters in Seattle

every day. These reports summarize the occupancy rate (submitted daily) , the total revenues

(from the restaurant weekly by day), the total expenses in maintenance and repairs (weekly),

employees time sheets are sent weekly. Currently, managers fill out paper forms and mail them

back to headquarters. Many managers have complained that preparing this report is a timeconsuming

process. Also, the managers at corporate headquarters have expressed concerns about

the accuracy and verifiability of the reports. Corporate Headquarters has received complaints

from customers about their reservations being lost. All reservations are currently tracked at each

hotel by the staff in a log book. Accounting has complained due to the fact the residency report

does not always line up with the income reports.

Every manager has assigned to him a grounds keeper, a building superintendent, several day

clerks, several night clerks, a restaurant manager and staff.

To alleviate these concerns and to improve the ease and efficiency with which the hotel

managers conduct their daily business, the company is proposing to develop a centralized online

computer GUI driven system with a database that can be used by the managers to track the daily

business of their hotel operations and to prepare their report
