Democrats used the unknown candidate Polk in the Election of 1844. Polk won on the promise that he would 1. Re-annex Texas, 2 take Oregon and California, and 3. Lower the tariff and expand slavery. New to politics, Polk found out very quickly that he needed to uphold his campaign promises and war was inevitable.
