QUESTION

Designing Relevant Research

Study Internal and External Validity

A study's internal validity is concerned with whether the researcher's methods were appropriate for the study's purpose and whether potential threats were minimized. External validity of a study is the extent to which a researcher can conclude that the results can be applied to a larger population or other organizational settings. How you assess the internal and external validity of any study must take into consideration its design. The criteria for assessing qualitative study methods are different from the criteria used to assess quantitative procedures.

Focus your discussion on the following:

  • Which specific internal validity issues are most likely to arise in your own research? (refer to earlier assignment on TBI)
  • What procedures are you proposing to minimize these possible threats to your proposed research?
