THEME: Duality
Option 1) The narrator's Dual Identities
As we know, the narrator has a dual nature in many respects. For example, he's half French/half Vietnamese; he grew up in Vietnam but was educated in the US. He also openly works for the former Vietnamese government while secretly being a communist revolutionary. Towards the end of the novel, he fully embraces the idea of being a "man of two minds."
Prompt: Analyze the significance of the narrator's various forms of duality in relation to how his identity splits at the end of the novel.
Questions for further analysis:
--How does the ability to "see things from both sides" lead to being of "two minds"? What type of psychological impact might this have on the narrator?
--When the narrator finally completes his "reeducation" at the end of the novel, his identity seems to split and he starts referring to himself as "we." In what ways is this the fitting conclusion to the different double lives he's been living?
