Discuss Secularism in France

France is a self-declared secular state.  This means that it is officially non-religious, although this does not mean that France is anti-religious.  This come from its history where the Catholic Church was aligned with the monarchy and the State persecuted Protestants.

There is a reading on page 990 of our text concerning religious expression in public schools.  Read that selection and discuss with your fellow students whether you support the position of the president of France or the comments by the three North African women.  As the book asks, do you think there is a way to reconcile the opposing positions?  This is graded like other discussions.
