Discussion: Converging Formal and Industrial Standards in the Realm of HEMS

According to Janssen, Wimmer, and Deljoo (2015), competing formal and nonformal standards play a role in the selection decisions of smart meter and home energy management systems (HEMS). However, there are regulation differences between smart meters and HEMS. As denoted by Janssen, Wimmer, and Deljoo (2015), smart metering is regulated by the government and HEMS are not regulated.  HEMS have seen a convergence in the development and promotion of standards into different industries. This has allowed for communication between components that originated in different industries (Janssen, Wimmer, & Deljoo, 2015).

Please review Figure 8.2 Converging formal and industrial standards in the realm of home energy management. I am sure you recognize some of the mentioned technologies. Select and discuss 1 of the technologies that have merged into multiple industries (For example: ZigBee is located in ‘Information and communication technology’ and ‘home automation). Make sure to discuss how the technology is used in multiple industries. Lastly, explain why you selected that particular technology.
