This move could impact billions of dollars in funding to K-12 schools and tuition assistance for college students. President Trump picked Linda McMahon to be his education secretary and asked her to close the department. In Trump's first term of his presidency (2017-2021), he attempted to close the Department of Education, but Congress did not vote in his favor.
