DiscussionQu
Three possible dissertation research topics/questions are found below combined with the reconciliation opportunities that each topic offers regarding its influential conceptual aspects associated with leadership.
Personal Identity: How does personal morals, ethical standards and a leader’s culture positively or negatively affect leadership growth? The development of a leader is influenced by several known and unknown antecedents. As each leader will utilize different theories, character traits and approaches to support their followers and organizations; it is imperative to examine the circumstantial influence on this individual development. In required reading from this week’s module, students learn the importance of the psychodynamic approach. This leadership approach is commonly utilized by leaders to “encourage leaders and followers to become aware of their own personality types and those of the people with whom they work in order to better understand their own behavior and the responses” received (Northouse, P. G., 2012). This topic addresses the question or theme of self-identification and self-awareness. As a leader if you do not possess awareness can you ever claim to be a successful leader? In current events, Americans can call into question Trump’s personal identity and how it negatively affects his leadership skills as his lack of awareness is causing immense suffering.
EI vs SI: Would it be more beneficial to have a leader of an organization have emotional intelligence versus social intelligence? In past assignments, emotional intelligence is discussed and identified as an important and influential concept regarding leadership. “The domain of social intelligence relates to center genres of emotional intelligence i.e. self-aware, humanistic, sociable and self-satisfying and thus necessitate emphasizing these genres in the fields which involve human interaction” (Khodadady, E., & Hezareh, O., 2016). Working closely to the border of Mexico, is it important as a leader to possess social intelligence regarding the effects of the commute into the United States and the ramifications it would cause to terminate someone who is consistently tardy due to the above?
Gender/sexuality: In a society that is redefining gender roles, gender identities and sexual orientation; would a specific gender identity or sexual identity positively or negatively affect leadership and their followers? “Diversity and inclusion depend first and foremost on leadership at the top” (Vogt, L., 2013). According to this article, the stimulus of diversity starts with the concept of leadership. This purports that the more sundry a leader is assumed to be; followers or subordinates will be able to better identify with their leader which in-turn could support the success of the team as a whole. As we have yet to see a female president as a leader in the United States, other countries have already participated in the movement of comprisal. Women, people of color and minorities have had to fight for inclusion. These group are currently still struggling for acceptance. Newer groups related in the LGBT community, sexual identities and those who do not identify with standard gender roles are now pushing for involvement in a community with a biased construct.
