Discussion 1

Frankie and Frannie decide to rob a local convenience store.  The both have guns, but agree that the guns won't be loaded and will just be used to scare people at the store.  During the robbery, an elderly customer has a heart attack and dies. 

Give a brief explanation of the idea behind a felony-murder statute - what is the charge meant to do? Look up the felony-murder statute for California State. How might it apply to this scenario?  Do you agree with the idea behind a felony-murder statute?  Explain.

Look up the statutes from 2 different states for one of the following crimes: battery, stalking or rape (keep in mind that the exact name of the crime can vary somewhat between different states).  Compare the 2 statutes in terms of how the crime itself is defined (your textbook gives examples of how to do this) - the act, intent, causation and harm.
