Discussion Prompt: The Spread of the Gospel

The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ was central to the message of the apostles. It is the good news of payment for sin confirmed through the resurrection that led people like the Philippian jailer to ask, “What must I do to be saved?”

For this week’s discussion, you will choose two of the conversion stories from the following list in the book of Acts and then answer the questions provided.

Choose one of the following:

  • 3,000 on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2)
  • 2,000 at Solomon’s Portico (Acts 3:1–4:4)
  • Cornelius and His Household (Acts 10–11:18)

And then choose one of these:

  • The Samaritans (8:4–25)
  • The Ethiopian Eunuch (8:26–40)
  • Saul (Acts 9:1–19; 22:6–16; 26:12–18)
  • Lydia and the Jailer (Acts 16:6–34)
  • Some Athenians (Acts 17:16–34)

Carefully read these passages, noting the details relating to the message preached, the apostles’ commands relating to salvation, and the role of the Holy Spirit. Then, state and summarize your chosen passages and answer the following questions:

  • How is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ central to the message of the apostles that leads to conversion?
  • What do the apostles tell converts they must do to be saved?
  • What is the role of the Holy Spirit in evangelism and salvation according to these passages? What are some other passages in the New Testament that further clarify the role of the Holy Spirit?

Discuss with your classmates:

  • What do these conversion stories tell us about how we are saved?
  • How do these stories resonate with your own coming to faith?
    • If you have not come to faith, how do these stories resonate with your understanding of salvation?
