table below. Hint: Start with CL at the top of your tree, and follow the PS rules below to the letter!
You should be able to draw both trees by following only these rules. Remember that
(parentheses) means that the component is optional. If the element is not in
parentheses, then it is not optional and you must include it in your tree. XP can stand for
different types of phrases (see Study Notes): a NP, VP, AdjP, AdvP, or PP.
CL -> NP Aux VP AP -> (Deg) A
NP -> (Det) (AP) N (XP) AdvP -> (Deg) Adv
Det -> that, ten, some, the, etc PP -> (Deg) P (XP)
VP -> V (XP) Deg very, so, too, clear, etc
Aux -> modals, have, be XP = a phrase of any category
(NP, PP, etc)
