Durkheim is one of the sociologists who focuses on the Functional theoretical perspective. He was fascinated with social integration and wanted to know what held societies together. After his research, he promoted the idea of mechanical and organic solidarity. He explained that Mechanical solidarity was a type of social order seen where individuals who do the same or similar tasks feel connected through similar work, education and training. This type is often seen in traditional societies and can be characterized by kinships. 

On the other hand, organic solidarity is a type of social order that comes with interdependence because of specialization of work. People become interdependent on others. We see this in modern and industrial societies. For example, if I wanted to buy a vehicle, nowadays, I would not start buying metal pieces and engine parts. I would go to a car dealership. But the cars are not manufactured at the car dealership, right? The car dealership depends on car manufactures to build the vehicles. Those car manufactures are not going out and picking up the raw materials themselves, they are more likely relying on a company that they order their parts from. There is complete interdependence, hence organic solidarity. 

 Given these two ideas of Mechanical Solidarity and Organic solidarity, what are your thoughts? Can we see these ideas still in place today?
