  • Identify at least five skills you have obtained through your general education courses that will make you successful at this job.

Throughout my years of school, the five skills I have obtained where conflict resolution, empathy, detailed oriented, written communication skills, and problem solving

Conflict resolution – Is another form of problem-solving but on a grander scale. Multiple parties can be involved to find a peaceful solution to their disagreement. What causes this dissatisfaction among the status quo is more often a person’s ego. As we look back in time war is a way to end a conflict between one another. This skill will help me at this job because I will have to negotiate supply agreements for key material categories with other suppliers.

Empathy – This skill allows you to fill someone’s passion or guilty for something. It is having the ability to use emotional intelligence to connect with someone’s emotions without even knowing them. Emotional intelligence is defined as “the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically” (Dictionary). Also, Evans and Lindsey 2017 stated, “Without mature empathy and social skills, it will be difficult for the leader to work effectively with customers, suppliers, and others outside the organization (Ch. 13 Sec. 2 Para. 16). Empathy will help me manage customer needs and apply them to the overall production plan.

Detailed Oriented – By far my favorite skill I have obtained. This allows me to submit the highest quality of work by using my full potential. It’s possessing the talent to see errors in your own work and in others. It’s the saying having your ducks in arrow or doting your I’s and crossing your T’s.

Written Communication skills – The power to brilliantly convey emotions to the reader like novel authors do is a skill I am still working on. Authors genius displays through novels capturing a detailed moment in time better than a motion picture. This skill will help me articulate my point through Microsoft office and excel which is a skill the require.

Problem solving – Involves more than just finding the answer to the equation. This skill encourages team building, creativity, communication and decision-making. Which are all important in developing a cross functional team through the departments.

  • Demonstrate with at least two examples how your newly acquired knowledge and skills have shaped both your personal and professional development.

Conflict resolution has shaped more of my professional life than my personal. Performance appraisal is by far a most complex conflict I deal with. The objective of performance appraisal is to improve the quality of work and raise the standard of employees. Nevertheless, emotions can get in the way of an unbiased appraisal. Baack 2014 mentioned, “Trait evaluations may be easy to create and use; however, some question their validity because the evaluator's personal bias can affect the rating” (CH. 4, sec. 4, sh. Performance assessment). In the Navy, we conduct yearly evaluations. Some go smooth while other you are fighting tooth and nail. I do not like it because of fluffy and the fact that it is a my person is better than your mentality. I aim to change this with my Sailors and provide them with the best tools to succeed. The way we evaluate is corrupt and needs to change.

Empathy is the biggest trait that has affected my life. I taught me how to validate ones feelings. I never understood this concept until I got married. I realize it is no long an I but a we and us mentality. This trait taught me how to effectively communicate with her. As well as how to understand what she needs. I am grateful for this trait.

  • Describe your plans for putting your education to use within your community.

I plan to use the global citizen concept and develop a high living standard, peace, and stability around my community. I also plan to teach a life course to young adults and children because I think we as a nation forgot that school will end but life want.

  • Identify at least five skills you have obtained through your general education courses that will make you successful at this job.

The five skills that I would say best will assist me in my future career and endeavors are Academic voice, academic integrity, Research, peer review, and formatting.

  • Demonstrate with at least two examples how your newly acquired knowledge and skills have shaped both your personal and professional development.

The two skills I would point at are Formattingand Peer review. the importance of formattingfor me is the ease uniformitypresents. keeping things uniform between every paperevery student writes is of great importance, especially when considering the time it may take to digest a hundred different formats. the way I exercised this was using the same APA style citation in my own professionalpresentation I made a few months ago. while givingmy new presentation on the risk of VPN uses from our customersand its implicationsfor a customerdevelopment stand point I used proper citation. at the end of the meeting I was actuallycomplementedon the citation and my department rewrote the way my company now creates citation to mirror APA formatting.

The other skill peer review is a fantastic tool as well, Allowing another peer of mine to review and get a fresh set of eyes on my work really allows me to create material that appeals to multiple levels of prior knowledge without sacrificing the point of the presentation.

  • Describe your plans for putting your education to use within your community.

My plans are to use my education here at Ashford as a great door opener for further education. Higher education courses really expect to have applicants that come from a diverse set of backgrounds and can bring many perspectives to the community, while staying professional. My expectation is to use this degree to show a level of autonomy capability and to have a other that Utah degree that shows a diverse set of involvement and exposure to other people from many different areas of our country.

Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings. Your responses should be a minimum of 100 words each and should either elaborate on a key point a peer has made or seek to gain additional information.

JOANNE'S POST:

An ethical dilemma I found within the MHHS case study is with one of the locations of the headquarters. The first location of their main headquarters is in a “middle to upper middle class neighborhood” with a median income of over 100k and less than 4% of people in poverty. One could argue that this neighborhood is not in extreme need for these services. Perhaps these services could be better utilized in a different area of the community with a lower median income, and a higher level of poverty. With the headquarters being located so far from where the community actually needs the services it could be said that the CEO and the administrative staff others don’t have a great understanding of the needs of the community. The location of these headquarters is also in an area where all of the administrative staff live. It is also where financial assistance and counseling is offered. With 90% of the staff being whit, only 5% African American, and another 5% Hispanic, this is an unbalances of understanding of the needs and culture of those who live in impoverished areas. If the headquarters were relocated into another area, perhaps many things would change. The program could reach more people, and the services offered would be of greater use. Financial counseling is not as useful to those with such a high income, and so few within the poverty level. The financial counseling should be moved to the other location where it can be more easily accessed by those who could benefit from it.

In order to overcome this issue, I would relocate the headquarters, or perhaps even go down to just the one location. If they simply added the financial services out of the second location they could save the cost of keeping the first location running. The saved funds could then be allocated to other areas of need. Some of the funding can be used to add a more ethically divers staff and cultural training for the current staff. As a human services professional it is important to establish a trusting relationship between yourself and your clients, or those who you are serving. If the clients already need assistance and have limited means, it is unlikely that they will be able to travel outside of where they reside, and or work in order to receive financial assistance and or counseling.

With this one change an ethical dilemma is solved, and services can be more accessible to those who need them. Additional funds will be available and human services professionals will have a greater understanding of the needs of the community in which they are attempting to help.

TANISHA'S POST:

One ethical dilemma that I have identified in the MHHS case study was the inconsistency of leadership of the organization. In the past 10-years, the organization has changed leadership 4 times with one CEO staying with the company longer than 3 years. The newest CEO to the organization now is the first female to ever have in leadership role. With no stability, these issues the organization face now are likely to arise. As a human service workers the challenges that are brought about with this is maintaining the same focus that was their prior to the new member. Leading through demands and control is another issue that is faced. Leaders lose respect when they have to rely on demands and control and losing respect is fatal to leadership. No matter how strong your vision is, if you lack the ability to inspire and motivate others you are not going to connect. The difference between motivation and inspiration is that motivation must constantly be renewed, while inspiration lasts a lifetime. Great leaders instill both. The best way I can think of overcoming these obstacles are by avoiding struggle when I can, and learn to face the unavoidable struggles with confidence. Knowing that this company has not had the best leadership or a stable team. I have learned that communication is critical. With any change that occur, I would make sure that my team understands the why, when, and how. I would set clear goals for the adoption of initiatives, and provide employees with the training they need to get comfortable with it. Effective communication is so hard because it takes commitment. You have to make effective communication a priority and that takes discipline, consistency, clarity of message, and a willingness to keep at it day after day. By putting a structured communication system in place that connects at the right level with all of my stakeholders, I can dramatically improve the effectiveness as a leader and drive faster top and bottom line growth. My main leadership route would be creating a plan and making sure everyone understands the end goal and communicate with my team throughout the entire new process.
