QUESTION

Elderly Development

Part 1:

What does it mean to be old? The term old has so many different meanings and interpretations depending on who you ask. A young child may think his first grade teacher is old, even though that teacher just turned 23. Old age adds another dimension to the definition of old. The course description places the age for older adults at 65 years or older. You also can’t really discuss older adults without discussing the “baby boomers,” those Americans born between 1946 and 1964. The last of the baby boomers will turn 65 by 2030.

  • Explain the terms old and old age and what they mean to you.
  • Describe your personal opinion regarding old age and explain how those views fit with what has been covered thus far in the course readings.
  • Research some information regarding baby boomers. Explain the significance of the baby boomers in understanding aging and older adults. Provide specific examples of ways in which the baby boomer generation has changed our understanding of the aging process.

Justify your answers with appropriate reasoning and research from your text and course readings. Comment on the postings of at least two peers, and provide an analysis of each peer’s postings while also suggesting specific additions or clarifications for improving the discussion question response.

Part 2:

Physical changes can be expected as we grow older. Some of these changes depend on an individual’s genetic makeup, while others are related to lifestyle.  Perceptions of aging often differ from reality. Some people believe that getting older results in a more extensive loss of function and physical changes. The dynamics of aging are changing, from a biological and sociological perspective. One of the major influences regarding aging and the perceptions of being old is overall quality of life or more specifically lifestyle choices.

  • Explain the reasons why someone might be under the impression that old age translates into multiple health conditions.
  • Describe the differences between normal aging and changes due to health conditions that are common in older adults.
  • Research general information regarding mortality rates, such as data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Explain how lifestyle choices have influenced older adults, especially throughout their lives.
  • Describe ways in which older adults are attempting to lessen the risks of age-related health conditions.

Justify your answers with appropriate reasoning and research from your text and course readings. Comment on the postings of at least two peers, and provide an analysis of each peer’s postings while also suggesting specific additions or clarifications for improving the discussion question response.
