Engineering project:

Bike sharing is getting more and more popular worldwide with the advantages of eco-friendly and low-cost. However one of main obstacle to promote bike sharing is that some bikes got lost. This has impacted the benefit of bike sharing company and lowered the interests of potential investors.

This project aims to develop a smart bike. This smart bike secures the bicycle against theft with the use of a 3-axis sensor, a loud buzzer, a microcontroller, various wireless communication technologies (GPS, GSM, Bluetooth) and a mobile app. The bike sharing company can 'activate’ the Smart Bike Alarm through a mobile phone app. If someone tries to move the bike without permission, the movement will be detected by a 3-axis sensor and a loud buzzer on the bike will be triggered. The owner will also be informed of its movement on the mobile phone via Bluetooth signal. If the cyclist walks out of range of the Bluetooth signal, he will also be notified. The Smart Bike Alarm has both GPS and GSM modules. To locate the bike (e.g. in case of theft or a misplaced bike), the company can send an SMS to the Smart Bike Alarm. The Smart Bike Alarm will then reply with an SMS containing a Google Map link. The owner can then click on the link to open up a Google Map, pin-pointing the Bike's location. With this system, the chance of bike being theft will become lower and it will be easier for owners to locate their bikes.

Besides above features, this smart bike also has a charge station which is powered by solar energy and wind energy. The solar panel will be put on top of the rider as a shelter, and a small wind turbine will be fixed behind the rider. So the rider can harvest extra power for free.
