“A Prayer From the Living,” Ben Okri

“Learning How to Die in the Anthropocene,” Roy Scranton

“The Death of the Moth,” Virginia Woolf

QUESTION:

In this group of readings we have discussed the way many authors use death as a metaphor for change rather than an ending. Choosing two readings from the above list, analyze the way the texts use death to make an argument about the human experience and/or civilization as a whole. What symbolic function does death have in the works you choose and how does it address a broader thematic idea?

SPECIFICATIONS:

Essays should be 4-5 pages in length. Please number your pages, use MLA formatting (see “MLA Manuscript Format; Sample Pages” in Hacker), and include a works cited page.

All drafts must be TYPED and STAPLED.

Instructions:

1.     The essay need to be 5 paragraph total.

2.     First paragraph is the intro: Introduce the texts and include a very brief summary of the text. And the last sentence of the intro is the thesis that answer the questions above

3.     Then the three body paragraph need to include a topic sentence at the first line. And each body need to have two quotes.

Example:

Body paragraph 1:

-       Topic sentence

-       Quote from 1st text

-       Analysis of the quote 1

-       Quote from the 2nd text

-       Analysis of the quote 2

-       Talk about how these two quotes together

The quote must be used from one of the text that you chose from above. And the quote must be related to the question.

All three body paragraph need to follow the same format as the example shown above.
