Essay 2 will require you to synthesize a secondary text – in this instance, one of the articles assigned as part of this module (Mustazza, – with one – two primary ones, in this case, Glaspell’s play, “Trifles,” and/ or short story, “A Jury of her Peers.
Readings:
Length:
If you choose option I below, you should expect to write 4 – 5 pp. (1,000 – 1,250 words) not incl. the “Works Cited” page and AI Reflection.
- You may discuss how any one of the secondary sources (Mustazza, Gilligan, or Kohlberg/ Hersh article) helps you understand Glaspell’s work/s differently/ better. For ex.:
- What do you understand Mustazza’s argument to be? How valid is it? Why? Which part(s) do you dispute or disagree with, and why? Just as importantly, how does the primary texts’ being by the same author complicate this question?
- Where, in the stages of moral development outlined by Kohlberg and Hersh, do you see the characters in either the play or short story fitting? Note: you needn’t write about both primary texts OR all characters; contrasting two characters, for ex., using evidence from both the primary text and the article will be a much better approach;
- Or how does Gilligan’s challenge to thinkers like Kohlberg and Hersh allow you to understand the various (esp. female) characters’ motivations? If you choose this option, you’ll need to cite both articles to show where the thinking diverges (again, choosing only the points pertinent to your own argument), as well as one of the primary texts.
Whichever of the above options you choose, and however you adapt same, you’ll need to cite both texts within the body of your essay, which means quoting them verbatim, paraphrasing these quotations, and analyzing this evidence to show how it support your argument. No other sources may be cited in this paper!
Like all work in our class, this essay will need to utilise 9th-ed. MLA manuscript and documentation format.AI Reflection This assignment, like all the other papers completed in this class, will require you to use a generative-AI tool and reflect on same; for ex., you may choose Gemini or ChatGPT to help you develop your content or request stylistic recommendations such as varying your vocabulary, being concise … You’ll need to write two+ paragraphs on this portion of the assignment, one in which you explain which tool you used and for what purpose, and one or more on your assessment of this tool: how helpful was it? Why (not)? Would you use it again? These will need to be illustrated with screenshots, a minimum of one illustrating your input (what did you ask the tool to do?) and one for the output (what result/s did it generate?).However, I don’t recommend copying and pasting your entire file into any AI tool as these use any content entered into them, or available anywhere, for training; you don’t want your report to be used by someone else to plagiarise, for example! Rather, you may want to copy and paste in an outline for your essay and ask for suggestions of additional points you could make or enter a single paragraph, even sentence, and ask for some stylistic tips (for example). You’ll add this as the final page+ in your file; it will be worth 10% of the total mark for the assignment.The entire file (essay + AI Reflection) will need to be uploaded to SafeAssign before I can mark same.
