Read "Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space" By Brent Staples. In the story he reflects on his difficulties of walking at midnight in Manhattan without scaring people to death. He is often mistaken for a criminal because he is Black. He discussed how he tries to solve this problem by whistling Vivaldi and other happy tunes.
