Extra Credit Research Participation: Students will have the opportunity to earn a maximum of 3 credits (or 30 points/3%) towards their final grade by participating in research projects. Ten points will be awarded for each hour of research participation. To earn these bonus points, students must sign up for an account on the psychology subject pool website, called Sona Systems (https://utpb.sona-systems.com/) and complete up to 3 hours of research participation; this system will keep track of your progress and your bonus points will be added to your final grade at the end of the semester. Students have until the end of the day of the regularly scheduled class to earn these bonus points. Instructors will add your final participation credits to your grade following the last day of class. Please note that you must be at least 18 years old to participate in ongoing research studies. If you are not yet 18, you will need to write summaries of published psychology studies rather than participate in studies.

**You MUST choose my course (PSYCH 4302.783) and choose to assign credits to my course in order to have the credits “count” for this course.**

Students who are unable to obtain their full thirty points by participating in these studies, or who choose not to participate in the studies, may earn their bonus points by writing a short summary (1 to 2 pages double spaced) of a published, peer-reviewed journal article in any area of psychology. Each paper will be graded on a pass/fail basis and will be worth 10 bonus points. Some excellent journals to find articles are: Psychological Science in the Public Interest, Trends in Cognitive Science, and Psychological Science.

1. Those interested in participating in research: In addition to participating and earning credits in Sona Systems (see attachment regarding how to register for Sona Systems), students will also complete a short report of each study participated in.

Please include the following: a) Your name, b) The name of the experimenter, and the number of research credits for the study (as listed on “Study Sign-up”), and the title of the research if available. c) A description of the activities you performed during the study (e.g., answer questions about 8 8 health-related behaviors, coordinate with other participants in conducting a military reconnaissance mission). d) A description of the variables of interest in the study (e.g., attitudes toward smoking, handedness, and birth order). e) A description of what the experimenter was trying to learn in the study.

2. Those interested in writing article summaries: Find a peer-reviewed psychology journal article via the databases at the library. You may also search for interesting articles in specific journals. Some ideas include: Psychological Science in the Public Interest, Trends in Cognitive Science, and Psychological Science.

Read the article and write a 2-3 page review of the article and submit it to Canvas. Your review should include the following:

· Citation (Author(s), Year, Name of Article, Name of Journal, Volume, and Pages).

· You do not need to turn in the article itself.

· What is the general question that the research is designed to address?

· What is the research hypothesis?

· What research design(s) is/are used in the study (e.g., survey, case study, experiment)?

· How many participants were there? Who were the participants (e.g., undergraduate students, male white rats)?

· Describe the conditions in the study (e.g., the independent and dependent variables).

· What were the findings and conclusions of the study?
