Choose two questions from the following list.  Please note that the essays must be in your own words.  If you use another person’s work, you must include citations. There will be no resubmissions for the Final.  Also, make sure that you answer all parts of the essay.  The essays are 15 points each.

Each one must be one to two pages. 

1.     The French Revolution moved from a moderate stage to a radical stage.    Identify and discuss three events and/or circumstances that you believe were the most significant reasons for this.  In your opinion, did the French Revolution live up to or betray its motto: “Liberty, Equality and Fraternity?”

2.     Napoleon’s career was shaped by the French Revolution. How did Napoleon rise to power?  What led to his downfall?  

3.     What were the tenets of Liberalism?  What effects did Liberalism have on the political developments of the early 19th century?

4. WWI became known as the 1st Total War in history.  What is Total War?  What made WWI a total war?

5.   What was Fascism?  Why did it have such an allure in Italy, Germany, and Europe?

6.   Why was Hitler able to defeat France so easily in 1940? How did Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union and the entry of the US into WWII transform or alter the direction of the war?

7.  What was America’s foreign policy during the Cold War?  What were some of the global events in the period between 1945-1982 that were influenced by this American policy?
