Five Mission Areas

The National Preparedness System (NPS) is the latest in a series of national systems intended to prepare the nation and its myriad communities to mitigate against, and to meet, any and all disasters. The NPS uses what the National Preparedness Goal describes as the nation’s five mission areas for achieving a secure and resilient nation. These five mission areas are as follows:

  1. Prevention
  2. Protection
  3. Mitigation
  4. Response
  5. Recovery

Assume the role of a county emergency manager. You have launched a campaign to make your community more disaster-resilient. As part of this campaign, you have booked several hour-long presentations to various community and business organizations within your county or city. Your goal with this first presentation is to make community leaders and business leaders more knowledgeable about the National Preparedness System (NPS) and how they can contribute to the county resilience to disaster events. You have decided that explaining the five mission areas within the National Preparedness Goal, and making those mission areas relevant to your community, is a good start.

The presentation with speaker’s notes should include these critical elements:

  1. Introduction, conclusion, and reference slides (these slides do not count toward slide count)
  2. A summary of each of the National Preparedness Goal’s five mission areas
  3. At least one example of how each mission area applies to your local community (if you are stationed on a military installation, you may use the installation, surrounding county, or your home county or city as a basis)

Guidelines for Submission: The presentation should contain 5 to 6 slides (in addition to the introduction, conclusion, and reference slides) and include sufficient speaker notes on each slide to communicate the slide’s purpose. Presentations should be created using presentation software such as PowerPoint. All citations and references should be formatted according to current APA guidelines.
