I found the article on the role of spirituality in health care to be very interesting, because of the statement that “spirituality is an essential part of the “existential domain” (Puchalski, 2001, para. 8). This article supported my views of the analysis of disease and healing by explaining the importance of spiritual belief on the wellbeing of a patient. It is said that those who have spiritual coping mechanisms tend to have a better outlook on life. As a stated in the first discussion post, I believe that science helps in treating the physical needs, while religion treats the emotional needs. It was said that in this study that people who have regular spiritual practice tend to live longer, I couldn’t agree more with this statement. When combining medicine and faith to our patients we are improving their overall health. Having a religious belief can help improve stress, less pain, and offers a way to cope with health issues. In general people who don’t’ worry as much tend to have better health comes, spirituality gives people the ability to worry less and live in the present moment. What I found most interesting in this article was the study of heart transplants patients who had improved physical function at 12 months, higher self-esteem and less anxiety, were those who participated in religious activities. This article has proven through actual studies that spirituality can be an important element in which the way patients face chronic illness and loss (Punchalski, 2001).
