Compliance or Improvement?

Using assessment for the purpose of quality assurance and quality improvement are oftentimes “hot topics” debated in the realm of higher education amongst institutional leaders and professional assessment organizations, just to name a few.

You have been called upon as the Assistant Provost of Academic Affairs at Universal University (UU) write a 2 page paper that will be read by various stakeholders, to better their understanding of the purpose of assessment efforts in the postsecondary learning environment.

• Determine whether you support assessment efforts for accountability purposes or for improvement, or both. It is acceptable to choose one or the other, place emphasis on one more than the other, or think that an equal balance of accountability and improvement are important to improve student learning and program development.
• Clearly articulate your point of view, including 2 reasons why you chose your perspective.
• Identify and explain one strategy to communicate your point of view with the Universal University community.
• Whichever viewpoint you choose, make sure that you support your position with evidence from the assigned readings.
