QUESTION

For my OCHEM lab we did a kinetics of a substitution reaction.

For my OCHEM lab we did a kinetics of a substitution reaction. The experiment used kintetics, or reaction rates to explore how temperature affects reaction rates and predict how the solvent composition and reactant structure modified reaction kinetics. All reactions involved a solution of an alkyl halide in acetone that was added to aqueous sodium hyroxide containing bromophenol blue indicator.

For reactions 1-4, .1 M t-butyl chloride was used and .1M sodium hydroxide was used.

Reaction 5, .1M t-butyl bromide was used and .1M sodium hydroxide was used

Reaction 6, .1 M sec-butyl bromide was used and .1M sodium hydroxide was used.

Reaction 7, .1 M triphenylmethyl chloride was used and .1M sodium hydroxide was used.

My slope for reaction 1-3 is -3348.7

My Ea for reaction 1-3 is 6663.9 cal/mol, 6.6639 kcal/mol (Ea of the reaction of t-butyl chloride with sodium hydroxide)

Question:

2. Thermal energy at room temperature supplies about 15kcal/mol of energy in molecular collisions

a.) Does your calculated value for the activation energy for hydrolysis of t-butyl chloride seem reasonable? (Explain why or why not)

b.) what value for Ea would you estimate for the hydrolysis of t-butyl bromide? and for sec-butyl chloride? (Explain)

(Please go into as much detail as possible, will give a good rating if the answer is detailed!!)

(Below I have attached data and observations from the experiment.)
