Below is what I have posted in my discussion forum

Following on from Jacki Vygotsky's theory emphasizes the important of social interaction and culture in a child's cognitive development.  It is the social interaction and language used between the adult and the child which enhances their development.  The concept that came out of this theory is zone of proximal development.  This is the difference between the child's actual development and  potential develop level with the adults guidance.  The adult provides the structure (scaffolding) around the child to assist and enable the child.  This concept can be used by social workers (adult) in their practice as they have the knowledge, expertise and skills to assist, enable or empower their client (child).
