For this assignment, write a 300-word political commercial to be used for a fictional presidential candidate running for office. This will be a paid political commercial written as a script that a candidate will read in front of a camera to persuade viewers to vote for him or her. Pretend the candidate is reading the script from the teleprompter to make this commercial (See image of teleprompter). Be sure to include all four:
- Non sequitur
- Circular logic
- Hasty generalization
- Red herring
To receive credit, be sure to identify all four logical fallacies within your text. You can do this by placing a notation in parentheses, in bold face type, with a different colored font after each fallacy, for example (red herring).
Think about the issue you want to discuss in the commercial, and consider how you will persuade the audience to align with your candidate on this issue. Make sure to choose the words, phrases, and ideas that will set a certain tone and play on one or two particular emotions in the audience. Ask yourself the following questions:
What issue do I want to highlight in this commercial? What will be the central issue of my candidate's political platform?
What words or ideas can I use to appeal to the emotions of the audience when talking about these issues? What is the best way to persuade the audience?
Give the fictional candidate a large personality, and feel free to get creative!
