Abnormal Psychology Final Project Choices

#1 Case Study of Pseudo-patient

For this assignment you are to develop your own case study. Think about the different disorders that we have covered this term. Select one that you have found to be interesting. Then, write a fictional case study of a pseudo-patient manifesting this disorder. Your paper must include a description of at least 5 specific symptoms of the disorder. The entire paper must be a minimum of 300 words (Max 500 words), written in 12-point font, and be referenced in APA format. You have been provided with multiple resources in the readings and lecture notes regarding the symptoms of the disorders. Please utilize these. You may also use outside resources. A minimum of 3-5 resources are required. Below is a template to be used for the completion of this assignment.

Patient Name: Write as “Person X” or “Mr. or Mrs. X”

Patient Age: Provide a hypothetical age.

Background Information: Include the pseudo-patients’ occupation, marital status, family situation/structure, childhood upbringing, etc.

Identification of the Disorder: Here identify the DSM-V-TR Diagnosis of your pseudo-patient.

Description of Symptoms: Here, in paragraph form, discuss in detail the patient’s presenting symptoms. Note: this should be the bulk of your paper. Remember to cite your sources using APA format. Do not hesitate to contact your instructor for assistance. Remember, make sure that any assistance is requested well in advance of the due date.   

Ethical Concerns: Here discuss at least one specific ethical issue that is important to consider when presenting a case study (e.g., obtaining informed consent from a patient, confidentiality).  

Bias: Here address how bias (e.g., stigma, stereotypes) might lead people to misunderstand the specific disorder that you have written about. Then, provide some suggestions for overcoming this bias.  

#2 Mental Health Disorder Flyer

For this project you will research and develop a flyer that draws awareness to a specific psychological disorder and where one can receive services for in your area. Think of this flyer as a Public Service Announcement in which you seek to educate those in your community. You are to create your flyer using a template from Word, Power Point, or Google Docs. Consider the different disorders that we have covered this term. Select one that you have found to be interesting and that you believe others could benefit from learning about. You have been provided with multiple resources in the readings and lecture notes regarding the symptoms of the disorders. Please utilize these. You may also use outside resources. A minimum of 3-5 resources are required. Please follow the outline below for the completion of this project.

Title: Here identify the DSM-V-TR disorder of your flyer.

Symptoms: Here list a minimum of 5 specific symptoms of this disorder. Now, remember that this flyer would be for the general public. So, list the symptom as its technical term and then explain what that symptom is in language that is understandable to someone who has not taken PSY 211. Be creative in how you present this data!

Where to get help: In this section you will list three places that one could receive help from in your area. To find such resources you can conduct an internet search. Example: “mental health services Phoenix Az.” Read what services that are offered at these facilities to ensure that they treat the disorder you are presenting. Make sure that you provide both the internet address of these resources as well as their telephone numbers.

References: At the bottom of your Flyer include the references (in APA format) of the academic sources that you used in the creation of your flyer. Do not hesitate to contact your instructor for assistance.  Remember, make sure that any assistance is requested well in advance of the due date.
