                                                       CLASSMATE’S POST

I have completed many surveys and a few interviews to be included in research. Completion of these surveys began in elementary and middle school when students in our area complete the communities that care survey that measures risk behaviors in student populations. This survey was built around questions regarding alcohol, tobacco and drug usage of the youth in our community. When I was completing these surveys as a kid it was just something we did, the teacher assigned it, and we completed it! Throughout my law enforcement career, I ha e been in a unique position as an adult to see the results of those surveys out into action. The surveys are still administered in our schools and I have Persia lily been involved in campaigns to move legislative action in our state based on the results of these surveys. For example I participated in a community movement to restrict the selling of drug paraphernalia in convenience stores, tougher legislation on teen tobacco use, as well as prevention and educational campaigns regarding the prevalence of underage drinking In our community. I have also witnessed the changing of laws as well as focused enforcement on social hosting, that is homes where parents provide alcohol to minors because of their belief that it’s safer to keep it at home. These surveys are sometimes more useful than we realize when we are asked to complete them. Being able to see the results of what I unknowingly was contributing to as a juvenile respondent on these surveys has led me to participate in higher levels when asked to participate in these types of research endeavors.
