Hello everyone:
This week we have a writing assignment, a film and discussion. Please read the instructions carefully for each part of the assignment. You only need to have the article posted and summarized by Wednesday. The rest of your posts can come later in the week. Between all parts, you still only need to post 3-5 times total (three is average, five is ideal).
Assignment Due (10 pts): Please find, summarize and post a PDF to a recent academic article that deals with hip hop and feminism. Who wrote the article? What is their position on the subject? Do you agree with their position? What kind of evidence do they use to support their claims/critiques/observations about hip hop and feminism? The first portion (posting and summarizing) is due on Wednesday before 5pm.
The second part of your article assignment is to read at least one other article (posted by your fellow classmates) and make a few critical comments and/or observations about the article (beyond what they've already written) and how it fits with what we've been discussing so far in the course. This response should be about two paragraphs.
****Note: Rather than posting links to your articles, please save the article as a PDF and attach it to your summary. Remember, other people need to be able to access your article easily. Providing that access is part of your assignment and you will lose points for not following directions. Your articles should come from the UW library database. If you have questions about how to access the database, it might be a good idea to visit the library in person. Also, it's ok if more than one person writes on the same article but let's please limit that to only 3 people per article. In other words, I'm not being as strict as I was with the Seattle artist profile, but please try to post a variety of articles so we can get a wide perspective. We learn more from one another if we're posting different articles.
FILM: Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes
This week we will also discuss the documentary film Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes. You can access the documentary via the library website. You need to log in and search for the title.
Please pick a scene that resonated with you or you can personally relate to. Begin by briefly sketching the scene, telling us your thoughts in light of what we've been talking about in class. For this response, I'd like you to be particularly mindful (and even critical) of your own social identity. In other words, try to avoid speaking for or about other viewpoints and identities. Tell us about your own. I will expect a wide variety of recollections and discussions.
