Poverty is the immediate result of any sort of stratification, whether it is domestic or international. There have been many public and private enterprises aimed at the alleviation of poverty at the national and international level. In this respect, the contribution of micro credit envisioned by professor Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh deserves primary attention. Micro-credit aims to create economic and social development among the poor sections of the society and it is built on the awareness that “lasting peace cannot be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty” (Prof. Muhammad Yunus & Grameen Bank Awarded The Nobel Peace Prize for 2006 ). The plan of micro-credit to provide ‘loans to the poor people without any financial security’ has been beneficial not only to the people of Bangladesh but to many other poor sections of the society in other parts of the world too.
Women all over the world have from this joint endeavor of Yunus and the Grameen bank as the micro-credit system has helped women empowerment and addressed, to a large extent, the question of global feminization of poverty. It has proved to be “an important liberating force in societies where women in particular have to struggle against repressive social and economic conditions” (Prof. Muhammad Yunus & Grameen Bank Awarded The Nobel Peace Prize for 2006). It is an acknowledged fact that economic growth and political democracy of a nation enhance surprisingly when women are provided equal opportunity and participation like the males. One can never think of women empowerment unless and until poverty among them is tackled.
As global poverty and various social and economic problems associated with global poverty contribute to global inequality, it is high time that international organizations took effective measures to wipe out global poverty from the poor and economically backward nations.
