Of course it is true that no man is an island (Giles, p 99). However, this must not be a reason why most people in the world should rely on others to accomplish tasks for them. Emerson advises human beings to listen to their hearts whenever a problem appears. Often, there are the inner voices which psychologists refer to as the conscience. The conscience is there to strategically guide human minds on the right thing to do. Before one decides to seek aids from others, there is need to consult the mind because it always has the best solutions to the problems faced. The voice from our mind, which is the conscience, is affected by our interaction in the society (Giles, p 99). Therefore, the quote advices humans to limit as much as possible what the society posits from the one’s decision making process. The quote exposes to as an author who believes in himself and deems self reliant as a key factor to promote individual and societal development. This is the message being proclaimed in most parts of American literature.
