Currently, cure for genetic disorders remains to be one of the current issues of concern as it is the priority for researchers, as well as the medics. Moreover, it cannot be dispensed that a significant number of people have been victims of such genetic disorders. In particular, Down syndrome commonly referred to as Trisomy 21, and a genetic disorder, is a disease that has affected many people, and as research would have it, it remains the leading cause of cognitive impairment Genes (Hindley 42). Reportedly, the disease affects approximately one out of the eight hundred live births every year (Hindley 56). Conventionally, scientific innovations coupled with extensive research are the answers to such health problems human beings are made to experience. Therefore, humans should stay on track especially the education and medical professionals for them to unravel the unforeseen emanating health/ psychological problems. In the world, today, one thing that is clear about human problems is that they are either emotional, social economic, or mental. This implies that most of the human disorders are either due to the psychological effects, genetic or occur due to medical reasons. Health related problems are classified as either physical or mental basing on the nature of occurrences (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, 67). This paper discus Down syndrome approaching it from the perspective views of a health expert. In light of this paper, the areas of concern would be to look at the meaning of Down syndrome, the chromosomal basics of Down syndrome, how extra genes bring about Down Syndrome, the risk factors for a conceived child with Down syndrome, the characteristics, and symptoms of Down syndrome, the available prenatal screening for the disorder, the cognitive impairment in down syndrome, other conditions that are closely associated with the Down syndrome, the management of the disorder, the early intervention, as well as education for the disorder, requirements of preschool children and infants affected by Down syndrome, as well as impacts of Down syndrome on adults. As defined above, Down syndrome is one of the genetic disorders. The disease was named after one popular Doctor going by the name Langdon Down, who first described the syndrome in the year 1866 as a disorder (Wiseman 45). However, the notable thing the Doctor failed to do is to identify the cause of the disorder. This gave room for more research on the subject, and in 1959, scientist made a discovery concerning the genetic origin of the disorder. Since then, the disorder has been closely associated with moderate to mild learning disability, low muscle tone among the infants, developmental delays, as well as the characteristic facial features (Wiseman 56). Moreover, most of those affected by the syndrome have gastro-intestinal problems, leukemia, the early-onset of alzheimer’s disease, heart defects, alongside other heath issues. It is worth noting that the Down syndrome symptoms range from mild to severe (Wiseman 78). Over the past decades, research has indicated that life expectancy for people affected with Down syndrome, has increased drastically. This follows improvements in both social inclusion and medical care. Studies show that an individual with Down syndrome when in robust health will averagely live to the age of 55 and beyond (Singer 79).
