In summary, strategic alliances and M&As serve different and highly specific purposes and their effectiveness varies depending on numerous factors. It is misinformed and erroneous to suggest that either approach is an alternative to the other.4

Airline alliances are a good illustration of the different dynamics involved in strategic alliances that dispel the notion that strategic collaborations are being used as alternatives to mergers and acquisitions.5 If airline A strictly wants to expand, increase shareholder value and grow its market share, it is more likely to prefer a merger or an acquisition to a strategic alliance.
