As the health care becomes more and more complex and as the primary care physicians become increasingly scarce more and more patient are opting to see family nurse practitioners. These practitioners are being charged with the responsibility of assisting patients to manage chronic and acute illnesses. They are in charge of conducting tests and procedures to diagnose illnesses. They in instances take care of patients as they transition from childhood, adult hood a lot like family doctors.

The role of family nurse practitioner is increasingly viewed as dominant due to the fact that close to half of the entire nursing fraternity is now family nurse practitioners. Another contributory factor is that since they can care for their patients of various ages they offer a certain sense of flexibility.

This role of nurse practitioner has been in existence since the early 1960s. From then to now it has gradually evolved from the more reserved role of being more of an assistant to the more pivotal role of taking the place of the primary care giver where physicians are not available. These roles are ever evolving in more or less the same proportion as those of physicians, especially with the ever increasing opportunities in specialty medicine. Specialty medicine is a growing trend that affects health professionals the world over.

Being registered nurses with advanced training nurse practitioners can cater for quite a range of medical needs. Under state regulations nurse practitioners are permitted in most of the same services offered by physicians with the exception of surgery. Diagnosis and minor trauma management, splinting and suturing, medication prescription, prenatal health and many more are well within the scope of nurse practitioners.
