Rita Dove’s poems concentrate on themes dominant during her earlier days. In the poem “Adolescence II,” Dove narrates under the setting of night time what goes into the mind and body of a young, adolescent girl as she matures. In the poem “The Final Solution,” Sanchez calls America a land of freedom, but with sarcasm. Thus, she separates ‘free’ from ‘dom,’ putting ‘dom’ in the next line. The whole poem is a brilliant example of free verse. The poet mocks how Blacks are often correlated with ‘hungry,’ ‘illiterates,’ ‘criminals,’ and ‘dropouts’ and manipulated by the state to ‘defend’ America’s free enterprise and democracy.
