His father who was known as Baba was a respected businessman and considered to be the most important man in Kabul. On the other hand, Hassan came from Hazaras, which was a clan of servants and slaves. His father was Ali, the loyal servant of Baba. Ali was mocked by people because not only for being a slave,

but because of his disability. Despite their friendship, Hassan was seen to be a loyal servant to Amir. He would always protect Amir from their neighborhood bully Assef, who also was a Pashtun. Assef did not like Amir to get along with Hassan, since the latter came from Hazaras, and was considered a slave. In this movie, Hassan did not go to school since slaves during the 70’s were not given the right to education. When Assef assaulted Hassan, Amir was even too coward to help him. Instead, he accused him of stealing his watch and birthday money to drive away from their house.

The biggest twist of the story was when it was revealed to Amir that Hassan was his brother. Even his father, Baba, got scared of what people would say if they found out that he had an affair with Hassan’s mother who was a Hazara.
