“You don’t know about me if you haven’t read a book called The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Mark Twain wrote the book and most of it is true.” (Mowat p 1). “In the novel Huckleberry Finn (1884), which is narrated by the character Huck, Mark Twain not only wrote from Huck’s point of view, but he wrote in the voice that Huck would use if he were a real person. This approach gives Huck authenticity as a real character (Microsoft Encarta).” Such authenticity is evident in the original novel where the three major characters namely, Tom, speaks slang” Huck speaks ‘slanger’ and Jim speaks ‘slangest. “Slang, profoundly consider’d, is the lawless germinal element below all words and sentences, and behind all poetry, and proves a certain perennial rankness and Protestantism in speech, (Kottler 188)…. it mirrors social history. it tells something of culture. it is an indicator of social forces….(189).”

Poverty, lawlessness and lack of parental concern on the part of Pap, Huck’s vagrant father, are the major causes of his cruelty to Huck. When he learned about Huck’s adoption, education and wealth he came back to get him for his own selfish motives—for money for his vices and to satisfy his own envy. “I can’t read and your mother couldn’t read. no one in our family could read before they died, so who do you think you are? (Mowat7)” Huck escaped from his physical ordeal and confinement inside the hut through a plan: working a hole to get out and later by killing a pig, splattering its blood on the ground, broke down the door with an axe –in short, faking his own murder.
