Hello, I am looking for someone to write an essay on The Underdogs by Mariano Azuela. It needs to be at least 750 words.
This position, however, changes at the very time they have achieved victory and are more powerful. They begin to hide behind the curtain of liberation and start to harass the locals for material wealth and gains. This behavior exposes their seedy character and the real personality that the rebel groups stand for.
The leadership of the group is also depicted as unstable and constantly changing. The change in leadership and control of the group makes it difficult to outline the ideas that the group stands for. For instance after the battle of Zacatecas, Demetrio is made a colonel, rising to the ranks of the leadership of the team (Azuela, 114). The inhuman activities and the conflicts that arise between the rebels can lead to a conclusion that the uprising was merely a series of local fights and not intended to relieve the locals of a bad rule.
A Marxist interpretation of the story could shed some light on the thesis developed above. According to Marxism, the interpretation of a literary work is based on the effect of class that causes the social divide between different members of a society (Eagleton, 11). Apart from the focus on class, the role of ideology as presented in the characters also gives a Marxist interpretation. In this case, considering the Marxist interpretation of the work, the lack of ideology by the rebel groups is a clear indication that there was no revolution in the first place. The main character Demetrio gets signed up to the group because he is fleeing from the federal forces. One in the group and even at the point that they have taken over Zacatecas, he does not realize the purpose that they are fighting for. They instead embark on intergroup wrangles, extortion and murder to maintain their fighting. Luis Cervantes a learned individual who joins the group is a representation of the presence of a sane ideological thinking within the group (Pellon, 109). He is presented as an individual passionate about the revolution
