America had remained isolationist since George Washington urged the nation against permanent alliances in his Farewell Address of 1796. At the end of the nineteenth century, the US engaged in a war with Spain over control of Spanish colonial holdings around the world. What prompted America to largely abandon its isolationist policies during the late nineteenth century?
