This study will present on March 23, 2010, President Barack Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). Opponents of the program continued to campaign vigorously against the Act in the House and the Senate throughout 2010. Additionally, the issue is now before the courts and will eventually be decided by the Supreme Court. The current debate is also enlivened by the presence of Teapartiers, such as Senator Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky and other far-right critics of health care reform with a new, national platform. The following discussion will focus on the opposition to health care reform, primarily as it has been expressed in Congress, but also, to a lesser extent, as it is proceeding through the courts. Consequently, the discussion will begin with an overview of the proposed reforms, the PPACA. This will provide a platform for identifying the key ideas of the opponents of health care reform. Their criticisms of the proposed reforms will be enumerated in the body of the analysis. Finally, the current situation and future direction of the debate will be speculated on in a concluding section. Not surprisingly, the White House lauds the reforms as all things to all people: “Health reform&nbsp.will make health care more affordable, make health insurers more accountable, expand health coverage to all Americans, and make the health system sustainable, stabilizing family budgets, the Federal budget, and the economy.” These Mom, Pop, and apple pie ideas of affordability, accountability and sustainability are shared throughout Congress on both sides of the aisle. The conflicts and confrontations are in the details of the practical programs that will achieve these shared goals.
