Naturalism vs Cubism La Pietà of Michelangelo of the Renaissance (1499) was made at the death of the French Cardinal Jean de Billheres. ical Beauty with naturalism. The body of Jesus dying in Marys arms is of a beauty that has become famous for over five centuries. Peaceful, Relaxed, a mother holding a child in her arms. The marble statue shows that her body is much larger in proportion to be able to hold a dead man. She is strong. She is also holding the arm. Michelangelo is also the intricacy of her complicated dress.
Guernica painted in 1937 (oil on a massive canvas) shows the anger Picasso had toward the Spanish Civil war. There is no beauty nor is there any naturalism. Each figure must be explained. Whereas the viewer knows why La Pietà was carved, Picassos Guernica must be studied. The painting represents his nationalism and his hatred towards Franco. It was painted in Paris
Though the painting is figurative, it tells a story. If one knows the history of the bombing of the city of Guernica, it is possible to see events in the painting. It represent his cubism in blue, black and white. There are three parts to the work. The eye goes to the lightest part which is to the center, then to the bull, then to the left.
There are many symbols to identify. "The bull as the symbol of Spain, represents the onslaught of fascism. Picasso said it meant brutality and darkness."(Picasso) The dead child shows that Spain can no longer remain innocence of Spain. The broken lines of the hand as are the soldiers lives when they return home from war.
Michelangelos La Pietà has a sense of beauty, calmness and maternal sadness. Picassos fresco shows his profound sadness that his country of birth is in Civil War. Under the Franco regime, he never goes back to Spain.
