By all accounts, Delia was trapped in a severely unhealthy relationship with Sykes. He was severely abusive, and was wantonly cheating on her with Bertha, a plus-size racial caricature of a typical 1920's black mistress. Sykes was continually baiting Delia into a huge fight, trying to pull out all the stops in order for her to completely lose her cool.

Of course once this would happen he would have the requisite justification to either kill her or at the very least have definitive grounds to leave her. His repeated attempts to rile her - the cheating, the beatings, and finally the pet snake unleashed a fury within her. A seething, silent fury which was the culmination of 15 years of pain and suffering.

Did Delia delve into the morally grey by allowing Sykes to die once his boast of "y'all jes' don't understand dese diamon backs lak Ah do"(Hurston, 34) turned out fatal for him Personally, I do not believe that she was responsible. She could have cared less with all the suffering and pain inflicted on her, and right when she was at a critical breaking point in their relationship. We have to put into consideration that she had a severely paralyzing fear of snakes. even the vague outlines of a whip's resemblance to one sent her into a complete fit.
