Psilocybin mushrooms or shrooms are hallucinogen- containing fungi that are believed to improve psychological health long term. These psychedelic mushrooms contain psychedelic drugs psilocybin and psilocin. Common genera include Copelandia, Galerina, Gymnopilus, Inocybe, Mycena, Panaeolus, Pholiotina, Pluteus and Psilocybe. Psilocybe cubensis is the most common specie in tropical regions and in the black market as well.

The effects of “magic mushrooms” come from psilocybin and psilocin. The functional unit being psilocin is said to be responsible for the psychedelic effects. Psilocybin and psilocin create short term increases in the tolerance of users. Moreover, they do not cause physical or psychological dependence, or in other words addiction.

The effects of these mushrooms are however subjective and tend to vary with different users. Their effects usually last from three to eight hours depending on dosage, preparation methods and personal metabolism. Despite this their spiritual effects are noteworthy as says a research:

“The psychedelic drug in magic mushrooms may have lasting medical and spiritual benefits” (Griffiths et al, 2008).
