There are many contributing factors, including, but not limited to, economic disadvantage, lack of education and social pressure. In this study, the researcher provides statistic, demographics, and relationship issues regarding incarceration due to reoccurring drug offenses. The researcher reviews the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs for incarcerated women due to drug-related offenses. The researcher also addresses three issues: (a) the reasons behind the increase in incarcerated women, (b) the statistics that reveal drug and nondrug offenses, and (c) the similarities and differences between the alternating programs for the Newport News Sheriff’s Department (NSSD).
