If it were not for the printing press, Martin Luther could not have appeared. The reformation can be directly attributed to the invention of the printing press because the people could read the pamphlets he distributed and come to their own conclusions about what certain Bible verses meant1.

Besides the printing press, the renaissance allowed advancements in seafaring technology that would later shape nations and increase contact with the rest of the world. If sailors lost sight of land prior to the renaissance, that could be a death sentence for them. With the advent of technology gained from the new knowledge, sailors could track their position and even sail against the wind. The new technologies allowed new and better sea routes to open up, especially to Asia. With new and more consistent profits being made, it was only natural for certain countries to want to rule the waterways.
