Trifles and the Bear

“Trifles” is one of the few one-act plays available in some literature libraries in relevant matriculation institutions. The play was written by Glaspell Susan. The play is a reflection of the author’s preoccupation with certain culture bound notions of sex and gender roles. The play mainly addresses women concern in the society. According to the play, the concerns of women ion most societies are always seen or regarded as trifles and unimportant issues that only no importance or little to the true work of any society. Glaspell claims that all these are being conducted by men. The bear, on the other hand is a play that was written by Chekhov (Keller 34). The play is mainly centered in the life of a widow, Popova who is continuously mourning for dead husband, and is staying alone in the country house and has boldly refused to go out and see anyone. Her behavior or decision to stay in the house almost a year after the death of Nicolai Mihailovitch, her husband surprises many people such as Lukas.

To begin with, the two plays have feminist characters as the main characters. The Trifles has Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale as the main characters whereas The Bear has Popova as the main character. The two plays also talk about gender and related issues in societies. They mainly talk about the place of woman in the society. Popova, in the Bear, is lamenting about her dead husband’s bullying and brutality.
