Gertrude portrays the mother of Hamlet as well as ruler of Denmark. She and Hamlet engage in a complicated and tumultuous interaction. Hamlet despises her mother due to the fact that she killed the King, Hamlet's father, in order to marry Claudius, the King's brother. Because of these circumstances Gertrude's actions have always been suspicious to Hamlet (Shakespeare 4).

Gertrude obviously is characterized into the traditional view on mothers. She was an honest person, motivated by the death of King Hamlet to her failure. She had a powerful sense of ownership, signifying her horror at the death of King Hamlet. She loved her husband and her son even though Prince Hamlet despised her. She was in control of her own identity. In Hamlet, her role was emphasized mainly on the level into which a logical wise mother and ruler of Denmark was established in actual life instead of fiction. Gertrude is a portrayal of the lack of peace in life.

Her style of seeking justice was not forceful. She displayed a tremendous disapproval for Ophelia and her relationship with Hamlet. She initially did not think of killing other people to find justice. She was not composed at times and seemed hopeless. But when the right time came, Gertrude stepped up and took advantage of the opportunity. She illustrated her logical reasoning in marrying Claudius.
