This happened to be the first major journey for the ship, Endurance. The review on this book would give the details of the story and critically analyze the circumstances that led the voyage to become a failure.

As the story reflects, Ernest Shackleton had started his voyage with plans to cross the Antarctica and reach the South Pole. Accordingly supplies were carried by the crew members. Once they would reach the South Pole, their plan was to make a trip to another side of the continent along with the required supplies the ship carried. However, their plans eventually failed since the ship got stuck in ice packs that hindered their journey and made their survival uncertain. Stuck by the circumstances, they remained on the ship for several months with hopes that the ice would melt and they would be able to continue with their journey. However, the ice did not seem to melt nor make ways for continuation of their journey. The leader decided to wait with normal responsibilities being performed by the members to avoid boredom. Shackleton had plans to use the summer months to continue with their journey but before they could make further plans, the ice placed crack in the ship. Gradually the ice floes were covering the ship from all sides and the pressures created on the vessel was not tolerable leading Shackleton to decide to abandon the ship along with his crew members.

The actual struggle for Shackleton and his members began from this point of time when they had to save their lives and reach their homes safely. The members followed their leader and hoped to reach Paulet Island where they expected to get rations. However, the melting and heavy snow made the marching difficult for the members.
