Scarlett O'Hara

In the classic novel Gone With the Wind  , set in the American Civil War times, the leading character Scarlett O'Hara is firstly perceived as a vain, arrogant, spoon-fed southern belle who has never had the need to lift a finger in her life. In spite of her extravagant beginnings she soon finds that the luxuries she lives are not a given and the harsh realities of life that set in are humbling in the best way possible . Through the hardships she encounters  she replaces her pettiness and weakness for confidence and strength. Soon, She finds that nothing can stop her from protecting the things she loves.

Margret Mitchel first interduces us to a coquette, haughty, and contumacious young Scarlett O'Hara who is boastful of her popularity among the courters of clayton county. Though she may have any gentleman she wishes, She sets her sites among the newly engaged Ashley wilkes. She vainly decides to profess her love to Ashley at the barbeque ball, at which he planed to announce his engagement with Melanie Hamilton to the town. When Ashley refuses Scarlett, she spitefully accepts Melanie's brother Charles' proposal for marriage in attempt to get a rouse out of Ashley. In this display Scarlett shows how arrogant and naive she is.

The War dawns Charles dies, and Ashley goes to fight, leaving a widowed Scarlett and a pregnant Melanie in Atlanta with their Aunt Pittypat. In Atlanta Scarlett and Melanie to her distain work as nurses aiding the wounded confederate soldiers. While in Atlanta, Scarlett was appalled at the thought that she would miss the fundraising bazaar because of her widowed title, but as luck would have it, her and Melanie were asked to work a booth. While at the bazaar, the distinguished batcher, Rhett Butler, to everyone's dismay asked widowed Scarlett to dance. Displaying her rebellious tendencies by Dancing with Rhett before the socially appropriate time of mourning, Scarlett accepts.

As the war draws near, the town ,including the doctor, evacuates. Scarlett stays behind in Atlanta with a heavily pregnant Melanie who is in no shape to travel. Putting aside her Jealousy of Melanie, she dauntlessly helps deliver Melanie's baby and cares for them. Showing a more considerate Scarlet O'Hara.

With union troops marching closer, Scarlett takes a sickly Melanie and her newborn back to Tara. Upon arriving, She is met with news that her mother has passed, her sisters are sick, and her father has dementia. With that Scarlett knew she would have to step up, run Tara, and take care of the ones she loves. With the Union camping in clayton County Alabama it was a matter of time before they came to Tara. Luckily Scarlett caught wind of their coming and strategically told everyone to take their food and livestock and hide down by the creek. Melanie and the baby stayed at the house with Scarlett and when the soldiers came they took only what scarlet left in the house. Thus showing just how crafty Scarlett O'Hara can be.

When a yankee man came by with questionable intentions Scarlett coldly shot him, displaying just how strong and capable she can be at protecting everything and everyone she loves. Scarlett even humbled herself to working the cotton fields in order to pay taxes on Tara.

In an attempt to claim Tara for himself Jonas Wilkerson, whom is apart of the freedmen burau, heard Taxes were raised on land, includingTara, and offerd to purchase Tara to wich,Scarlett boldly replied no. Scarlette was not about to sell her beloved home.

Short on money a proud Scarlett went to Atlanta to find Rhett and accept his proposal of being his mistress only to find Rhett in jail, Outside of the jail Scarlett runs into Frank Kenndy, Her sisters' long time fiancé, and in her manipulative and ruthless ways influenced Him into marrying her, Saving Tara at her sisters cost.

By Marring Frank she also acquired a store in which she guided Frank in running. Frank then falls ill leaving Scarlett to run the store. Scarlett shows her business savvy side by running the store far better than Frank could ever fathom running. One day Rhett ,who bribed his way out of prison, comes to the store and Scarlett in her conniving ways convinces him to lend her money to purchase the saw mill, under the condition that she will in no way help Ashley.

 Frank dies in an attempt, which Scarlett did not know about, with the Klu Klux Klan, who Scarlett disapproves of, to avenge Scarlett after she ran into some trouble with a freed slave and an yannkee. Laid with guilt, Scarlett mopes that Franks death is all her fault. Soon Rhett comes and proposes marriage and with a heavy heart and guilty conscience Scarlett accepts, and they have a child named Bonnie.

With the news of scarlet marring Rhett spreading like wildfire, Scarlett starts to converse with the republicans of town, furthering herself from the old life and ways, showing that she rebelliously cares nothing of the old ways.

Melanie decides to throw a surprise party for Ashley and asked Scarlett to distract him. Scarlett and Ashely talk at the saw mills and it is there, in an thoughtful manner, she realizes that her childish crush on Ashley was, not who he really is but, who she dreamt he was.

As time goes on, Scarlett and Rhett drift apart. Then with the sudden loss of her daughter Scarlett is more vulnerable and fragile than ever before. Wishing Rhett was there to comfort her, Scarlett, with swallowed pride runs to Rhett and openly tells him how she feels. After being rejected Scarlett determinedly goes to Tara to regroup and feels as though she will become stronger with time.

Though Scarlett may be selfish and vain, Ashley, Melanie, Tara, Frank, Rhett, and bonnie helped shape her into much more than she used to be. Scarlett bloomed into a smart ruthless compassionate woman, who will stop at nothing to protect and acquire everyone and everything she loves. Thus, shaping her into the courageous Scarlett O'Hara everyone knows and loves
